Careers event hailed a success

A large-scale event aimed at helping adults and young people in the North East to find a new career has been deemed a success.

Approximately 500 people attended the Next Step careers event at St James’s Park, Newcastle, which showcased new opportunities in education, training and employment for those looking to take the next step in their careers.

The event provided the benefit of a jobs fair, CV workshop, self-employment and application form workshops and confidence-building, as well as career advice from a team of Next Step experts.

Also exhibiting at the event were the uniformed services, Jobcentre Plus, recruitment firms and private sector employers, as well as several high profile colleges and universities, which were all called on to highlight the options open to people in finding a new career.

The Next Step advice service was set up to help young people and adults from all backgrounds who have reached a crossroads in their life, whether they are school leavers, professionals looking for a career change, looking to further their education or go it alone in business.

Partnership co-ordinator Joanne Milnes said: “With so many changes to employment opportunities in the North East recently, this event hopefully inspired many people in Newcastle to develop their existing careers, enter new ones, or even set up their own businesses.

“We wanted to show that the next step doesn’t have to be daunting – it can also be fun and exciting – and we hope that this event helped our attendees to realise this.”

A second careers event will be held at the Riverside Arena, Middlesbrough, on Thursday, April 19th.
