Young learners at Polam Hall independent day and boarding school donned caps and gowns as their achievements were marked at a special graduation day.
Parents, grandparents, teachers and a class of 18 five-year-olds at the school in Darlington came together to celebrate the end of one chapter in the children’s education and the beginning of a new one.
The children were graduating from Upper Foundation – the last stage before they enrol in the first year of infant school – and marked the occasion with a special ceremony and prize giving.
The event, in the school’s Liddiard Theatre, saw trophies and certificates handed out by Mrs Sally Pelham, chair of governors at Polam Hall.
The occasion also paid tribute to Mrs Foster, a teacher at the school who will retire later this year.
Mrs Pelham, who gave all 18 children a certificate during the ceremony, said: “This was a very proud evening for all concerned and was also quite an emotional occasion, as Mrs Foster wished the children every success for next year before she retires. We also said a sad farewell to another two of our teachers, Mrs Buxton and Mrs Sedman, who are both retiring at the end of this term.”
Polam Hall pupil Jessica Wood, who graduated at the event, said: “I really liked being able to dress up in the gowns and be on the stage in front of my mum and dad and I also remembered to smile and walk nicely onto the stage.”
As well as enabling pupils to celebrate their achievements this year, the event also signified the important step that the children are making as they enter the infant department.
Having previously had red uniforms, from next year they will wear the traditional green Polam Hall attire, along with caps for the boys and straw boaters for the girls.
Polam Hall is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school for boys and girls aged between three and 18 years old.
It has been based at its site in Darlington since 1854 and prides itself on maintaining its traditional values and rich heritage while being able to offer pupils the strongest possible skills for the future.
