How to do a Caitlyn

Caitlyn Jenner made social media history recently after gaining more than a million Twitter followers in four hours, beating the record held by Barack Obama.

There’s no doubt fame had a helping hand in helping her become Twitter’s Queen Bee, but we thought we’d give you some tips to see if you can get close to challenging her for the title.

Tweet during peak hours

How do you expect people to follow you when they are asleep? There are plenty of websites and infographics which will help you with this but after carrying out some research, Twitter confirmed that 9am, 3pm and 6pm see heavy use. Have a go and see if it works.

Create an effective profile bio

Unless you are Beyoncé or Barack Obama, an interesting bio entry can be a great way to attract followers. The key is to be cleaver, creative and intelligent, without going over the top! A good mix of description and links to other sites is a good bet to get people interested in what you have to say. If you struggle to sum up who you are, a famous quote can also be a great way to get people to take a second look at your account.

Ask questions

One of the most effective ways to get followers is to get people engaged so they tweet you back, and there’s no better way to do this than posting questions. People like to answer all kinds of questions, so don’t hold back, tweet out some questions and see if you can get people talking!

Link to interesting sites

It’s easy to get boggle down with mundane posts but are people really bothered about what you had for breakfast? Linking to interesting sites and blogs means you will become a reliable source of information – a fountain of knowledge of sorts – which is a great way to gain followers.

Post pictures

As the saying goes “A picture is worth a thousand words.” In this case, it needs to be worth 140 characters. It’s a fact that everyone loves looking at pictures, so remember, the more interesting, the more likely you are to grab people’s attention!

Create a niche

While random tweets about the weather or what you are wearing today may get you some followers, having a target audience in mind is much more effective. If you have a lot of knowledge about a specific subject, even if it’s just a hobby, that is a great place to start. Make sure you post answers to the most frequently asked questions about your subject and answer any inquiries you get.

Repeat yourself

This may surprise you but if you are an avid tweeter, you followers may not have seen everything you have posted. Only repeat your best and most informative tweets a few times a day and see if you get an increase in followers. Be careful not to over use this method though, you don’t want to be known for posting nothing but repeats!

So, we can’t promise that these tips will help you beat Caitlyn’s record but give them a go and let us know how you get on!
