The Future of Instagram


At the May 2019 F8 Conference, developers from Facebook were keen to show off the new features coming to Instagram, hoping to keep it as one of the world’s top social media sites.

As the most visual of platforms, brands and influencers alike were thankful to see that the camera tool is getting an interface overhaul. Long-term features like Boomerang and Superzoom will now be accessible via a simple swipe-right of a new dial, which will surround the classic shutter button. GIFs and stickers, including a new non-profit fundraising sticker, will be available on a swipe-left. No longer will we be stretching our thumbs to reach those all-important buttons at the top of our phone screens!

A new Create Mode has also been teased, allowing users to share Stories without taking images or video first, so we’ll be on the lookout for more details on that soon.

Instagram has also been busy creating tools for influencers, with a new Creator profile coming soon. This will be a half-way house between the current personal and business profiles, with the accompanying Creator Studio giving users access to follow/unfollow analytics for the first time, making it easier than ever to see what content is the most influential.

Creators will also be able to tag products directly on their posts, a feature previously only available to business profiles. This tool is likely to have the biggest impact on influencers, who will be able to directly compare their posts with a rise in product sales. We may well see sponsored product placements become a huge part of business-influencer-customer interactions.

And to round things off – ever wanted to create your own Stories filter? Facebook’s Spark AR Studio, which includes the tools to do just that, has only been available to a select few, until now. The software has now been opened up to more developers through a closed beta, and we think it won’t be too long until every business will get the chance to turn eyebrows into company logos, or whatever you might choose. Who knows, by this time next year you may be able to turn yourself into Harvey or Hugo at the touch of a button!
