Instagram’s latest update could revolutionise your hashtag strategy

Social media gurus will already know that Instagram’s recent update enables users to follow hashtags and there are many ways this change has provided business with the tools they need to enhance their brands.

The photo-sharing app’s update means that firms can:
• Develop their organic reach (with the right strategy)
• Increase followers
• Create a hashtag that’s unique to their brand and encourage users to follow it and monitor engagement

However, this update means that firms need to ensure their hashtag strategy is up-to-date and are taking advantage of the benefits the update has provided.

The question you need to ask yourself is, “Does my business need a hashtag makeover?”

If you answer ‘yes’ to any of the following, then you need to up your hashtag game.

Do you avoid using hashtags on your Instagram posts?

The best way for your target audience to discover your Instagram profile is through the use of hashtags and if you’re not using them, you are reducing the chance of spreading awareness of your brand to potential followers.

Do you find yourself copying and pasting the same hashtags on each post?

There’s only so much repetition followers can take and if you’re using the same hashtags over and over again, your audience may get tired of seeing the same content from you and unfollow your hashtags or profile.

Not to mention, repeating hashtags could trigger a spam alert by Instagram’s algorithm and may negatively impact your reach.

Are you using restricted hashtags?

This may shock you but there are a number of common hashtags which are restricted by Instagram.

Have you ever used #HumpDay, #Snapchat or even #ValentinesDay? Yes, all of these hashtags have been restricted by Instagram, which means if you search for them Instagram will note that recent posts using the hashtag have been blocked due to some content not meeting Community Guidelines.

Do you ignore Instagram’s hashtag insights?

Instagram Insights is a business’ best friend! You’ll need to set up your account as a business profile in order to access the stats but the insights can not only show you statistics on your profile visits, reach, followers and actions, but you can now see insights on how your post was discovered, including if it was found through hashtags!
