Robyn Haggie and Sarah Dover – who both attend independent day school Polam Hall in Darlington – have been accepted onto the revered Samling vocal course.
The course, which will be held at The Sage Gateshead, has been working with some of the world’s greatest artists since 1996 to help propel young talent towards glittering careers in music.
The Masterclass Programme that Robyn and Sarah will attend provides singers and pianists with a sympathetic environment where they can work, perform and, above all, be inspired.
Samling pioneers what is possible when internationally respected artists, talented young professional musicians and schoolchildren are brought together and the course provides life-changing experiences through a range of projects and outreach work.
The Polam Hall pupils overcame an extremely competitive selection process for the course, with 60 people auditioning for just 12 places in front of four of the country’s top vocalists.
The girls were invited to audition by their singing teacher Miranda Wright, a former Samling scholar; they will now take part in two development day courses later this month, before performing in a concert at the Sage in October.
Year 10 student Sarah Dover, who is currently studying music for her GCSEs and plays the flute and piano, is a former Durham Cathedral chorister and part of the National Youth Choir as well as being one of Polam Hall’s music scholars.
She said: “As there were only 12 places available and over 60 people auditioning, I wasn’t expecting to get in. I am thrilled I have succeeded and can’t wait to take part in the course.”
Robyn Haggie is an A Level music scholar and a member of the National Youth Choir. She is hoping to read music next year at university with a view to studying vocal performance, then intending to complete her post graduate education at conservatoire.
She said: “I am really excited; it’s a great opportunity to improve my vocal skills and interpretation, while working with some of the best singers in the country.”
Caroline Law, Director of Music at Polam Hall said: “I am delighted and not surprised the girls have made it onto the Samling course. They are so talented and in my experience are the most talented singers I have worked with. They are naturally gifted and work hard too. This opportunity is a clear career progression for both students”.
