Event aims to inspire American dreams for North East scholars

studyUS at Polam Hall aims to inspire American dreams for North East scholarsPolam Hall School, in Darlington, is giving young people in the North East the opportunity to learn more about studying in America at a major event.

Polam Hall School is to host a special conference for students, their parents and teaching staff in partnership with studyUS – an organisation which supports students looking to study in America and guarantees them a place at an American university, subject to a pre-qualification assessment.

Amid rising university fees in the UK, the event, which will be held on Thursday, November 29 at 6pm, will highlight how much more affordable it can be to study in America as well as showcasing just how financially accessible US campuses are compared to their British counterparts.

Tyler Burton, a New Yorker who specialises in placing students at universities in the US and helping them to find funding opportunities, will be joined by fellow studyUS colleague Phil Garner at the event.

Phil will explain how the programme can guarantee students a place at an American university, whatever their finances, and help with acquiring financial aid for them – as long as they can achieve basic entry requirements.

Tyler will then present the advantages of visiting different university campuses and the importance of choosing a university carefully.

Phil said: “I hope that students, parents and teachers will come to the event and familiarise themselves with the opportunities that are out there for lots of young people to study in America.

“It would be great to set Polam Hall up as a centre of excellence in providing a two-year AS and A-Level course to prepare pupils for study in America.

“This course will be a significant part of Polam Hall’s offering – a distinctive opportunity which will hopefully attract younger pupils and more overseas students to attend the school.”

John Moreland, head teacher at Polam Hall School, added:Having been on four athletics tours with Oxford and Cambridge Universities to Harvard, Yale, Penn and Cornell, I know firsthand that the facilities in US universities are fabulous, not to mention the professional coaching in all fields of sport and of course the opportunities for scholarships in a much larger range of institutions than we have in the UK.

“The recent increases in tuition fees mean that studying in the US is no longer the prohibitively expensive venture it used to be.”
