Two years ago Polam Hall School, in Darlington, began accepting boys across all year groups and has since been extremely active in helping to facilitate its new male pupils.
Many of the boys joined Polam Hall from the boys-only Hurworth House School, which has now closed down.
And now the Polam Hall Parents’ Association (PHPA) has made the final step needed to complete the transition from girls-only to mixed school – by raising funds to buy a brand new set of rugby posts.
While the boys have enjoyed various rugby fixtures over the last two years, their matches have had to be played “away” due to the lack of a proper pitch at Polam Hall.
Thanks to the new posts, however, the school can now host its own “home” matches, and pupils are already enjoying the facilities by holding and participating in various tag rugby competitions.
John Moreland, head-teacher at Polam Hall, said: “We are very grateful for the funding that has been put towards these new rugby posts and are very proud to have this latest addition to the school grounds. We hope that they will be enjoyed by many of our boys and girls for years to come.”
Catherine Hart, member of the PHPA and parent to three Polam Hall pupils – two of whom are former attendees of Hurworth House School – has played a crucial role in raising and directing funds towards Polam Hall’s rugby posts.
Catherine, who is also former chair of the Hurworth House Parent Teacher Association (PTA), said: “I am absolutely delighted with the new posts. It’s great to see the money raised by the PTA being put to such good use, and I think that the posts will play a great part in building up the sports department and the school as a whole.”
Craig Wilkinson, PE teacher at Polam Hall, added: “We’re hoping that the posts will help to encourage more club membership here at the school, as well as allowing pupils to improve their rugby skills by watching others practise.”
Polam Hall School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school for boys and girls aged from two to 18 years old.
