A North East student with a passion for horse riding is galloping towards Olympic gold after passing her A-levels with flying colours.

This week she celebrated further success by achieving three C grades in her A-levels and is now aimA Level results, Polam Hall, Olympics, Olympics Gold, Horse of the Year Show, show jumping, Laura Robinson, Polam Hall School, Darlingtoning for her ultimate ambition – the Olympic podium at the Rio 2016 games.

“I got the results I was expecting so I am really pleased and so is my family. It is also my sister’s birthday so it will be a double celebration for us.”

Laura, who studied A-level PE, Business Studies and Maths, has decided to take a gap year to focus entirely on developing her show jumping skills and will spend the next 12 months taking part in competitions across the world.

Having started riding when aged just three, she joined independent day and boarding school Polam Hall as a seven-year-old and was able to further develop her talent, with the school making special arrangements to allow her time to practice and compete.

She said: “I’ve been riding for as long as I can remember and my ultimate aim is to achieve Olympic success. But to do so I have to fully focus on becoming one of the best in the sport and taking a year out will enable me to do this and compete in more competitions.”

Polam Hall headmaster John Moreland said: “Laura’s academic and sporting success is indicative of her hard work and dedication, as well as our school’s ethos of seeking to unlock the full potential of our pupils and our understanding of the importance of extra-curricular activities.”

At this year’s European Show Jumping Championships Laura was part of the junior team that was one fence away from winning a gold medal. As she looks to hone her skills, Laura will now compete regularly in competitions including the Scope Festival later this month and the Horse of the Year Show in October.

Polam Hall is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school which has a strong focus on excellence, service, extracurricular activities, family values and pastoral care.

It has been based at its site in Darlington since 1854 and prides itself on maintaining its traditional values and rich heritage while being able to offer pupils the strongest possible skills for the future.
