Social Media Day 2016

At H&H we love all things social media, so today is one of our favourite days of the year.

Social Media Day has been around since 2010 and was launched by Mashable (funnily enough not Facebook as you may have thought) as a way to recognise and praise this wonderful creation, which features so prominently in the daily lives of millions around the world.

It can be hard to remember a time before Facebook et al. and people are often surprised how long social media has been around, so we thought we’d share this timeline of moments with you, as our way of applauding social media as we know and love it today.

1999 – The first blogging sites become popular.

2003 – LinkedIn is created. 13 years later the platform has over 433m registered users and is available in over 200 countries.

2004 – Mark Zuckerberg creates Facebook which today still remains the biggest social network, with over 1.65 billion monthly active users worldwide.

2006 – Twitter is created and with its short 140-character messages, considers itself an information network. It hopes to challenge Facebook but with current monthly users at 320m, it doesn’t compare.

2010 – Social media turns its attention towards photos and images with the introduction of Instagram and Pinterest.

2011 – Did you know Snapchat was this old? A year after its conception, 20 million photos were being shared per day on the image messaging and multimedia mobile app. Latest figures show Snapchat hit 10 billion daily video views earlier this year and has 10 million daily active users in the United Kingdom alone.

2016 – Facebook live has taken social media to a new level, as it aims to ward off strong challenges from Snapchat. Facebook describes live as the best way to interact with viewers in real time, field their burning questions, hear what’s on their mind and check out their Live Reactions to gauge how your broadcast is going.

As you can see, it’s certainly been an exciting era of social media we have been able to enjoy and we know it’s only going to get better in the future.
