As Universities and colleges start to shut down for the Summer holidays, we’re always inundated with CVs of keen students looking for their first job in PR. Unfortunately we can’t take you all on, so here are some tips to help you get your dream PR job:
Make sure you use correct spelling and grammar
If we see a spelling mistake in the first line of your covering letter the email is closed and deleted.
We get many CVs sent to us daily. Creativity is a key attribute we look for in new recruits so be creative with your CV to make it stand out.
Don’t be afraid to call to check that your CV has been received. This can help get you noticed and you can also gain valuable feedback. If the person you need to speak to is busy, keep trying.
Become a fan!
Follow all of the social media accounts of companies you are looking to work for. Read the blogs and press releases they send out too. Like, comment and share to attract attention.
Seek as much work experience as possible, even if it means working for free in the holidays. Instead of just doing a week, try and commit to a few months as you will learn much more.
Start attending local networking events. This is a great way to meet people. Remember that saying… ‘It’s often about who you know, rather than what you know.’
Set-up a Linked In account. Many employers advertise vacancies on here now. Make sure your profile is up to date and work on growing your connections and building relationships.
Don’t give up!
If you get turned down, don’t give up – there are plenty more opportunities out there.
