Sarah Millican kicks off the Darlington Comedy Festival

Hilarity BitesSarah Millican, one of the nation’s most popular female comedy acts, kicked off the biggest stand up festival Darlington has ever seen.

The TV favourite topped the bill at a charity gala event which launched the Darlington Comedy Festival.

Event host Hilarity Bites expected to raise as much as £10,000 for local charities from the gala, ahead of the month-long festival that is bringing some of the funniest acts from the UK and other parts of the world, to the North East.

As well as Sarah Millican, other top acts performing at the gala event included Chris Ramsey, Jason Cook and star of BBC’s “The Magicians” Pete Firman.

Hilarity Bites owner Neil Jollie said: “We’re unbelievably happy with the line-up that we got on the night. In Sarah Millican we have the biggest selling female comedian of all time, but more than that, we have a local act that has been extremely supportive of us over the past few years.

“I think this is a brilliant way to mark the fifth birthday of Hilarity Bites as we welcome some old comedy friends, some new acts and also provide a great range of content, including shows for under 16s and free shows to hopefully give new audiences the opportunity to experience live comedy.”

The comedy festival is running throughout July across several venues including Darlington Civic Theatre, Inside Out, The Art Centre and The Forum.

In all, over 50 stand ups will take part in 21 shows during the festival, with more than 5,000 visitors expected to attend in total.

Alongside some of the best known British performers, the festival includes acts from as far afield as Canada, New Zealand and the United States.

The charity gala was held at Darlington Civic Theatre in aid of Daisy Chain, Butterwick Hospice Care, St Teresa’s Hospice and Darlington Association on Disability.

Hilarity Bites is the driving force behind Darlington’s thriving comedy scene and has brought the likes of Reginald D Hunter and John Bishop to the region during the past five years.
